The Boston Globe recently featured a story about the spread of music therapy into hospital settings. The article was titled, Chemo, Radiation and Song. I really liked the article because it gave a lot of insight into why trained music therapists are important in the equation. Although music itself is very powerful, it is the selective and goal-centered use of music paired with therapeutic rapport and interaction that enable music therapy to be so effective in treating patients. Kudos to the Boston Globe for a well balanced story!
